03.31.2020 Day 10

Coffee with a blanket in the sun on the porch - was what I was doing with my quarantine time this morning.

The breeze was brisk as the sun shined like a beacon in my eyes. I kept checking the sun’s position on the chicks. It’s magic to have a swiveling nest! There is one moment each morning when the sun shines directly on the babes if the heart is swiveled just right, but it doesn’t last for long. They/re positioned in a way that keeps them dry and shaded for most of the day, and other birds flying by would never see them, unless they flew up onto the porch. Frances doesn’t allow such things.

She was watching from her tree as I stepped up onto the chair for peeks. She seemed calm and content while preening herself in the bright sunlight. A moment for herself, away from the chicks, was probably just fine with her.

Their fuzzy little baby feathers were blowing in the breeze, and their little dragon faces were sleeping in the sun. The occasional mouth smacks, twitches and squirms reminded me of sleeping with my own kiddos back when they were small.

10. If hummingbird days were years for our young, the Chicks are 10 today. Frances leaves them alone i more. When she does sit on them, their beaks peek out along the side of the nest, which is now much more full of little bird bodies. Their heads look bigger today, and their eyes (which seem less like big orbs) are just beginning to open.

I shared some pictures today on a big bird watching site, and was reminded how careful I must be when taking pictures and videos. While I feel confident that Frances is okay with me and my camera (since she decided to come back this year for more of my nosey neighboring), I want to pass along a suggestion that we mostly leave birds’ nests alone. Now that the Chick’s eyes are open, I’ll be more mindful of keeping close contact to a minimum. Hmmmmm…. seems like what we’re all doing right now. #socialdistancing

Frances is serving up some lunch and cleaning up the nest. She doesn't stick around to sit on the Chicks as much now, as their pin feathers are helping them ...
Day 10 brings more feathers, the very first wing flaps, and some slightly open peepers!
